James Loy was born in Sheffield in 1953. He spent his early years in Blackpool, where he served an apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker. Several years later he went to work in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as an aircraft technician for the National airline. In 1990 some of his artwork was published in the airline in-flight magazine. During this period the subject of James Loy’s art work is the sculptures and monuments of Jeddah and recycling of waste. Jeddah was not the ideal place to hold an art exhibition but he was able to sell some of his work and re-produce his main body of work onto greetings cards. James and his family returned to the UK in the 1990’s to manage a self catering accommodation on the Blackpool Promenade, during that time he studied Art and Design at The Blackpool And The Fylde College. His work has been exhibited in The Grundy Art Gallery and Solaris Centre in Blackpool. Many of his 2D and 3D works reflected the gambling mood at the time, as Blackpool was trying to become the casino capital of the North. He has since moved on from the tourism business and now concentrates his time on teaching engineering at his local college. James Loy contemporary paintings and 3D work are bold, challenging and sometimes controversial. He is inspired by mass culture and is always on the look out for that life-affirming experience. This website is under construction and is periodically updated. |
Blackpool Art I painted Blackpool Promenade during the fireworks displays and illuminations season in 2000. These works are 12x16 inches. They are acrylic on sprayed black velvet and cotton bonded on hardboard. The velvet soaks up the paint and makes the image look as though they are pastel crayon drawings.
